Kokyo Japanese Restaurant

(2 reviews)

Kokyo Japanese Restaurant is on the corner of Yonge Street at Alexander, just a couple blocks north of Carlton/College. They have a fairly large patio where you can enjoy both the sun and the bustling street of passerbys on Yonge.

Comment ArrowWe opted for the patio as it was a nice day out. I’m not sure if I’ve ever sat on patio where I was literally on top of a subway grate. If that’s your thing, Kokyo Japanese Restaurant is for you! That aside, this is one of the few sushi places that actually will serve Corona with a lime (instead of a lemon, or nothing at all) so already they’re in my good books.

Comment ArrowAh yes, the good old TTC, as you know my favourite form of transportation (sarcasm). I get to feel the vibrations from it every few minutes while we were eating. Although since we are talking about the TTC here, the vibrations probably range from 5 minutes to 20 minutes with their usual delay schedule. Hey wasn’t this the very first place we went to when we decided to do this whole review thing? It’ll always hold a special place in my heart at least for that. Also for some reason I seem to remember it ended up raining later on that night but the patio is covered which is another plus.

fred
Comment ArrowYes, it was covered so all was ok. Quit slagging the TTC. It’s far from perfect but I don’t mind it at all… Now, granted, I mostly use the trains so that’s not exactly the same as waiting for a bus at the edges of Scarborough. Ok, back to the review. Yes, this was the first sushi place that we decided to ‘review’ (if you can call this drivel that). I wasn’t all that familiar with the whole sushi thing so I let my fellow writer choose a selection of items…

Comment ArrowLOL. I love to harp on the TTC. From what I remember we ended up getting some of their specialty rolls so it wouldn’t be too much of a shock to your system. Figure you don’t need to start off with the hardcore raw fish. I can’t really remember what exactly we ordered but I figure the name ‘rainbow’ was in there and probably spicy tuna rolls.

fred
Comment ArrowHmmm… Really? This is where this review totally goes to hell, seeing how we can’t think of what we actually ate. Our (one) reader is going to love this! My recollection was that we tried it all: The (standard) sushi pizza, what I call ‘regular’ sushi (I’m white!?), maki, and some sashimi as well. What I do know is I enjoyed everything I had. The service was decent… and my beer came with lime (bonus points – if you read the other reviews you’ll know why). Now that was when we were there. Other things go on around that area at other times, apparently.

Comment ArrowWow you have a great memory. It’s sad but to be honest, the one thing I remember the most other than TTC thing is that there was some kind of shooting the very next day, literally in that very spot and time we ate. I do remember the food being good though. Perhaps it would be better next time to sit inside?

fred
Comment Arrow…away from the windows! Ok, lets wrap this review up. I’m going 8 limes out of 10.

Comment ArrowYes, away from the windows is key to this review. 7 shotgun shells out of 10 for me.

  6. The food was okay, the price was cheaper than other Japanese sushi place in town. But please DO NOT EVER ORDER THE BEEF. The beef was harder than bricks. The beef was not cooked for chewing.
MOST important, the service was extremely terrible. Nobody came to serve us any drink, not even water for over 15 mins after we sat down. The waitresses were very rude & they showed no patience when taking orders.
We will NEVER go there again even if it’s free for all-you-can-eat!

  7. Hrm, unlike the last poster on this page, my husband and I got fantastic service at our first and subsequent visits to Kokyo. In fact, the service one of the reasons (along with the patio — I happen to not mind the TTC rumblings bring a truly urban girl) we have made this our go-to sushi joint in the area. Highly recommended!

  8. Dining at Kokyo for about 7 years.
Perfectly balanced rolls, fresh sashimi. Friendly staff. Great experience!
