6.0  /  10The brutal wait to be seated wasn’t softened by the food taste. Tako’s sushi tasted just like every other run of the mill sushi joint. Not horrible, not great…but just average.

Comment ArrowTako Sushi
We made the rare trek out to Mississauga to meet up with a friend (making his Sushi Toronto debut for this review). The sushi establishment of choice was Tako Sushi, which recently opened a new location in Mississauga. We arrived around 7pm on a Saturday night, and the lobby was packed with people waiting for seats. The word ‘chaos’ came to mind as we watched the staff attempt to seat people.

ken
Comment ArrowWasn’t looking promising. The place was sure jammed. Feels so good when the collective mind power of 4 hostesses says to me in broken English “Uhhh…..I don’t know” when I asked how long it would approximately take to get a table. At least we got to stare at a piece of paper with a #58 on it as our ticket in.

brandon
Comment ArrowI guess you could say that it’s busy because it’s good? For some reason though I don’t have that kind of confidence here. Oh well, now we wait…and wait. The place does have that new Asian Fusion kind of look to it. There’s one thing for sure, it’s pretty damn loud in there. Kind of cafeteria like.

ken
Comment ArrowMaybe if they had 5 people working the front, things would go smoother. Oh wait, the manager looking dude came by since there seemed to be a scheduling conflict with that group of 7 people. After a few minutes of him bickering with the hostesses, the group got lead to the back for that habbachi stuff…… and then 5 minutes later they all get lead back to the waiting area as it was already full. Maybe they need 6 people working the front….. how absurd.

fred
Comment ArrowHehe… That McDonald’s across the parking lot was looking pretty good at this point. Oh, hang on: After more waiting things were finally looking up. There were empty tables appearing and one of us (the ‘new guy’, actually) went over and basically helped them figure out that they could seat us… I think we’ve found the new Employee Number Six (maybe a weekend gig?).

brandon
Comment ArrowSo we waited almost 30 minutes to finally get seated. Now let’s hope that it will be worth the wait. At this point, we were warned that the service is very slow so I was pretty much preparing myself to probably wait another 30 minutes before we’d actually be eating anything.

ken
Comment ArrowI think all the tables close to the waiting area were relieved, since we kept looking through the wall decor in anticipation of an open table. Is that worse than sitting by the kitchen or bathroom? Hahaha! Hmmmm….. I think I went straight to the bento box pages while you two started chatting like Tokyo locals about what kind of unpronounceable nouns you were going to order. I chose some kind of box that had a ton of things in it, which the server didn’t understand until I literally had to open the menu and show her the page.

fred
Comment ArrowHehe… Exclusive Tako Sushi Tip: Point to menu items during the ordering process. Let’s back up a second and clarify one thing: “since we kept looking through the wall decor” was really just one of the three reviewers… I’m sure our astute readers can guess which one. Back to our order. The non-bento-box eaters picked a number of items off the menu: The salmon sushi pizza, spicy tuna roll, spicy scallop roll, green dragon roll and the ‘Sushi Silver’ (a mix of nigiri with a half roll each of California roll and salmon roll). At this point, we were expecting to wait, wait, wait…

Comment ArrowMiso Soup and Salad
I distinctly recall hearing, “Okay guys check the clock. It’s now 7:36pm, let’s see how long it takes for our food to come out.. You’ll see what I’ve been talking about!”. Then 5 min later, out comes soup, salad and some rolls that come with the bento box. Haha, guess it’s going to be one of those nights.

Rolls with Bento Box

ken
Comment ArrowHahaha! Ok, I concede defeat here. I was expecting a long wait like the first time I came here and was totally wrong. BUT when I went the first time, my bento box came out mildly fast, but it was the orders of sushi and other stuff my colleagues ordered which took forever….. a good 30 minutes. Never the less, my bento box appetizers did come out fast. The box I ordered was called Kasuma or something (#125). Had grilled salmon, tempura shrimp and veggies and some saucy chicken. I think our entire order came in 15 minutes….. including all you two’s komodo dragon rolls and fire launching phoenix sushi or whatever they are called.

Bento Box

I’m not a picky eater, so the bento box was fine enough for me. I think the box was $15-16. Food quantity is quite good. Food quality is ok….. no better or worse than I’ve elsewhere. If you are a stickler for hot food, disappointment. The soup, rice, tempura stuff were all warm. Nothing seemed piping hot from the kitchen. I don’t think I’ve ever been able to down a bowl of miso soup so fast in my life….. actually two bowls as Freddie gave me his bowl like I was a guy standing in a soup line. Down the hatch x2. I don’t think Fred likes the murkiness of miso soup. And I’ll be honest, I have no idea what that beige stuff in miso is. You mix it with chopsticks to make it even out, then 20 seconds later it separates from the liquid like oil vs. water. Who knows. Tastes good.

fred
Comment ArrowSoon after the first dish of rolls came out: Spicy scallop, spicy tuna and the Green Dragon roll. The spicy scallop and spicy tuna were super heavy on the rice. The rolls were almost too big – and that was solely because of the quantity of rice. Not only that, both had large amounts of cucumber included, making me wonder how much fish was actually in there. A better question: Where’s the spice? The ‘spicy’ scallop and ‘spicy’ tuna were not spicy at all. I was hugely disappointed. Earlier in the day I had spicy scallop rolls from Sakura Ichiban in downtown Toronto, and those are how they’re to be done (please take note, Tako chefs)! These rolls weren’t horrible, but definitely not great either. The Green Dragon rolls I did enjoy, however. They were quite tasty.

Comment ArrowSushi Platter
Gotta agree with you there. Wasn’t spicy at all and I hated the fact that there was large cucumber for both of the rolls. It really drowned out the taste of the fish. They pretty much tasted like California Rolls. The actual sushi platter was pretty much standard although they did give pretty large cuts of sushi. Nothing worse than having a huge chunk of rice with a small thin layer of fish on top. Now where’s the sushi pizza? I always thought that was considered an appetizer?

fred
Comment ArrowYes, no qualms about the sushi platter. The fish was decent, and even the usually awful rolls they throw in were quite good, too, compared to the ones that most sushi places throw in there. Ah, yes, the sushi pizza… Waitress comes by… We ask about it… She makes it seem like she knows we’re supposed to get it and that it’s normal operating procedure that we don’t have it yet. My hunch is it was forgotten and she was trying to save face. Who knows… but our predicted waiting period from earlier in the evening had finally arrived — waiting for the lonely sushi pizza to arrive.

ken
Comment ArrowOh yeah. I forgot about that pizza thing. I forget if you took a pic of it, no way I’m eating that. Raw pink fish on deep fried rice in the shape of a starfish….. with a glob of orange fish eggs in the middle. No thanks. I was full anyway. I have to say that out of all bento boxes I’ve ever eaten, this one gives the most volume. But talk about a misleading picture. The box has a pic of small fancy veggies, but the actual box has a square of steamed broccoli and a spoon-sized portion of macaroni salad. I’ve never been to Japan, but I highly doubt people there eat stuff resembling a KFC side order.

Macaroni salad

brandon
Comment ArrowI figured you’d eat it since it’s rice is deep fried! Oh well, the funny part was that we were sitting waiting for the sushi pizza and they kept coming over and asking us if we wanted ice cream dessert! Multiple waitresses were doing this as well and we had to go out of our way to say that we are still waiting for the sushi pizza. I did notice that there was a sushi pizza looking dish sitting on the counter by the sushi chefs down the hall. 10 – 1 says it’s ours yet it’s been sitting there for probably 5-10 minutes.

fred
Comment ArrowSushi Pizza
Annnnnnnnd… it finally arrives – with the presentation looks quite different than most salmon sushi pizzas we get. At first I was thinking, wow, more salmon than we usually get on a salmon sushi pizza… That moment of joy was short lived as I attempted to eat a piece. It completely fell apart. A total mess. I didn’t enjoy the taste really either. I mean, it wasn’t horrible (we’ve definitely had worse) but not great either — and not worth the wait, to be honest.

ken
Comment ArrowI like how you guys tried to convince me to try it as it was deep fried. Sure was. While you two were munching it down, I checked out the bathroom. Hmmmm….. Nice interior, but needs someone checking it every hour. Any fast food place was cleaner. I bet nobody cleaned it since lunchtime. And it was funny watching some teenage punk talk to himself while he waiting to use the SINGLE STALL. Hey everyone! Let’s play a game! Paper towel pyramids!

brandon
Comment ArrowYup the sushi pizza was a disappointment and not worth the wait. Not to mention that it came out so late that I wasn’t even in the mood to eat anymore. One thing about the washroom. Pretty hilarious that the garbage container that is supposed to be under the hole in the sink was actually at the side. As you can see in the pictures, people still just throw it down the hole and it ends up on the floor. Nice. You sure that guy talking to himself wasn’t on a Bluetooth headset or something?

fred
Comment ArrowMango ice cream
So, that ice cream they had been pestering us about (I guess that means ‘we want you out of here!’) arrived once we were done mucking with the sushi pizza. I had Mango. I can’t complain about free ice cream! The first Mississauga sushi review experience by the Sushi Toronto team has been interesting. Unorganized hosts, a long wait, non-spicy ‘spicy’ rolls (with too much rice) and awful sushi pizza is probably the worst of it (actually, I guess that’s most of it). The wait staff were good and the food was quick (minus the last dish). The nigiri was decent, but not amazing. All in, I would definitely try other places in Mississauga before going back to Tako Sushi. There’s nothing to see here, move along: 4/10.

ken
Comment ArrowI have to admit, that scoop of Mango ice cream was pretty good. And Bran should be extra happy as he was worried you guys’ a la carte orders would not get it. This place was ok. Not sure about Fred’s 4/10. Seems like he wants to purposely make a Mississauga place low, since he hates the burbs. Food was ok (quantity over quality), wait times were mixed…. long wait in the lobby, but food came quick. Bathrooms were gross, but at least the grossness was on the floor under the sink. 6/10

brandon
Comment ArrowWell you know my rule for ice cream dessert so an instant + 0.5 just for that. Love me some green tea ice cream! Having said that, in Toronto, this place would be in my “yet another Toronto sushi restaurant” category. Guess I better add Mississauga to it. Not bad, not great, nothing really stands out. Pretty much tastes like all the rest. I think it’s only busy because it’s a new “hot” restaurant in the area. I predict it will fizzle out and become just like every other place. 6 / 10.
