So it’s been a looong time since we’ve had sushi. It’s time we got back to it for the new year. This time around, we decided on a small restaurant in downtown Torornto, tucked away on Elizabeth street, just a bit south of Dundas. Japango which ironically the place where the brothers from Wow Sushi used to work at.

Sushi guys were from there when I chose it. Regardless, there we were at noon on a Saturday – the only patrons in the restaurant. The place is fairly cozy and, yes, small. If you happen to have a table that seats two, good luck getting all of your order on that table. Thankfully by the time our food started to arrive there were only two other groups there so we could slide the table next to us over.

The place is pretty small and they really jam in the tables to make it even tighter. I had a decent size knapsack and there was nowhere to put it other than taking an area that another customer would normally use. Lucky for us, it wasn’t a busy time for then and we had enough room to use up. Anyways, once we sat down, we immediately get miso soup and then hot green tea served as we look over the menu. Nice on a cold day and I like it when you are immediately served tea rather than have to ask for it specifically.

After perusing the menu we decided on the Tempura Appetizer, Sushi Pizza, Spicy Scallop Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, and the Dragon Roll (shrimp, avocado and eel). Our order was taken and we then started talking about that new upstart Gaming site GamerVets.com

Ah yes, gamervets.com, it’s a great gaming site targeted towards the older more mature gamers out there. Feel free to check it out! Now that I am done with the plug, on to the food. Since we were the only ones sitting at restaurant at the moment (more start to come in throughout our meal), the tempura appetizer comes out immediately, hot, right out of the fryer. Tasted pretty good and was not too greasy or had too much batter.

Agreed on the tempura…No complaints. Next up was the two spicy rolls – Spicy Tuna and Spicy Scallop. There was definitely some kick on both – especially the scallop. At first I was thinking too much spice taking away from the taste but by the second piece that was forgotten. I’d get both again – w/ the Spicy Scallop being the preferred of the two (a bit more taste there, it seemed).

Agreed about the Spicy Scallop. I liked that one a lot more than the the Spicy tuna. Both were pretty good with the right amount of “spice” to it. The waiter made a good decision to merge our table with the one beside us giving us more room. One thing curious is that he left the menu and place settings still there for some reason and just moved them aside on the table to make room for the following plates we ordered. Thankfully another waitress came and took them away a little later on. Next out was the Dragon Rolls. They were decent too but since they didn’t have the same kick and flavour as the spicy rolls, not as memorable.

I enjoyed the Dragon Roll. I also liked how theirs seemed to be fairly different in appearance. Aren’t most Dragon rolls with the same set of layering throughout the roll? Japango’s had the avocado on top of part of the roll and eel on other parts. Nice touch, I thought – at least visually.

The Sushi Pizza arrived last (an appetizer no longer!). I would classify it as “same as anywhere” except for the fact that there was some spiciness there. Other than that, nothing really special about it.

Hmm I could have sworn the dragon roll was shrimp tempura with mix of different sushi and avocado layered on top? Oh well on to our usual sushi pizza. Not sure why this appetizer came out last but whatever, not complaining. It was decent on par with the rest we’ve tried. Standard stuff other than then it was spicier than normal. They did include some chunks of avocado on the side for some reason which is the first I’ve seen that addition.

Ok, the food alone came to $46 before tax. The service was good. I thought the environment was fairly cozy – including having the chefs right there by the tables. I’m sure when it’s packed it gets quite interesting… Hope you’re a people person!

The rolls were quite good – especially the Spicy Scallop. I’d put Japango at “above average” for Toronto sushi: 8/10.

I pretty much agree with you on all fronts. Nice cozy little place that can get jammed pretty fast I imagine. Seats are close together with not much room to maneuver. If you have bags or are on the larger size, go during oft peak hours because there’s no way you’ll be able to squeeze in or sit down without hitting someone if it’s busy. Overall an enjoyable experience, nice start to the year after taking so long between our last review. 8/10 for me as well.

I’ve become addicted to the ‘group buying’ services online that email you every day with a new deal you can purchase (if enough people purchase the deal, it’s a ‘go’ – if not, your money is refunded). TeamBuy.ca had $60 worth of sushi at Sushi Queen Izakaya for only $28, which I thought was a pretty good deal. Also, I wanted to check out this newly opened sushi place as it is located in one of my former ‘hoods – namely the Bay & Dundas area. I arrived at 6:30pm and opted for the patio out front.

I have actually been to this place for lunch a while back when it was called “Mochizuki”. It was kind of known for the rotating sushi bar but I always ordered off the menu. It was pretty good from what I remember as the sushi was quite fresh. When it closed down, I wondered what would be next and never imagined it would be another sushi restaurant!

Replacing a failed sushi place with another doesn’t seem like the best idea, but I guess they feel Sushi Queen Izakaya offers something Mochizuki did not. Right away the service was prompt… I believe I had 2 (maybe 3) staff ask me about a drink order. I’d rather have that, though, than the opposite. I also showed my TeamBuy ‘coupon’ which was received well (sometimes you never know how they’ll react to the ‘coupon’ customers). When the staff member saw the dollar amount of the coupon she indicated we needed another table. She pulled another table along side to give us more room for our upcoming sushi feast. I appreciated that heads up service — rather that then have people scramble once the dishes come out. So far so good.
Looks like we’ll be pushing our appetites this time around. The menu is quite extensive with lots of pictures. I also noticed that this place has all kinds of different types of different rolls. Obviously unique to Toronto since many are named after streets such as King St Roll or Yonge St Roll and of course the sushi pizza.

I took a quick tour of the inside of the restaurant when I went to go wash my hands in their washroom. They’ve changed some things around and made it more of an open concept. I remember when it was the old restaurant, there was a lot of barriers/walls so it felt a lot tighter to move around. Tonight, the room was about half full of customers.

It must be a standard recipe so it seems to taste more or less the same everyone. I would be curious to find a place that has “the greatest miso soup” and see what that supposed to taste like. As long as there’s tofu, and it’s hot – it’s probably fine by me. Oh yeah and the sushi pizza tasted pretty good too.

Even the standard Rainbow, which usually are ‘meh’ was quite good. The Spicy Tuna Dragon didn’t it do if for me, however. The nigiri I had no complaints with. But, yes, to your comment, the $60 worth of sushi we ordered was too much for two people. We maybe should have brought in a third on this review. The service hadn’t dropped off a bit – they were around throughout the meal to check in on things. Think the exact opposite of what Hiro Sushi deems as ‘service’.

True, I hope this place makes it. Good service and good sushi should be rewarded. Hopefully they don’t face the same fate as Mochizuki did here at Bay and Elm. We got the remaining bits of sushi packed up ‘to go’ and then asked Frank (one of the many servers) how business was doing. Frank (pictured above – sort of!) said things were a bit slow and they needed to do more advertising to get people in the door. There are many large condo buildings nearby (the ‘Bay Street condo corridor) so I’d suggest a simple flyer or menu mail out to at least a few of those buildings. Ditto for some of the office towers nearby. Leveraging TeamBuy was a good move, though. Well done. Anyway, I hope they stick around. I’d come back without a coupon for sure: 8/10.

It’s in a great spot and I can imagine it pretty busy for work/lunch time during the weekdays. I remember Mochizuki being pretty busy during lunch as well so I guess the key to success will be evenings and weekends. Good luck to them! Decent sushi with great service. 7 / 10.
At first it was a traditional sushi restaurant that I can’t remember the name of. Then within the last 6 months noticed it changed names and has become an “all you can eat” style sushi restaurant. This time I was meeting an old university friend for dinner at 7pm. The place is pretty standard looking. It wasn’t busy when we got there but slowly started to fill up over the next hour or so. The AYCE dinner is set at $18.99 per person and each table gets a sheet of paper with a number of items listed on it and a pen. Beside the item you want, just write down how many. Pretty simple. We just ordered a wide selection of tempura, rolls sashimi and sushi. The tea we got must have been sitting around for awhile because it was lukewarm at best. The next batch was much better. The food came out very fast and was fairly fresh. I wasn’t expecting any miracles here and didn’t get any.

Service was extremely prompt and they refilled our green tea at record pace, much like the Mandarin restaurants water refilling techniques. One thing that we never found out was if they charge you for any left food. We only left around 3 pieces so I guess that’s why nothing was mentioned by the waitress. Overall I give it a 7 out of 10.
