I really had no idea there were that many in Toronto. Must be one of those rare sushi franchises here in TO. Anyways, this is my first taste of Ichiban. The place is small and cozy with a traditional bamboo looking decor. We arrived at around 6:30pm and were seated near the window. At that time, it wasn’t that busy.

Service was prompt and friendly. We ordered the spicy salmon sushi pizza, spicy tuna rolls, the Rainbow Roll (california roll topped with tuna, salmon, avocado and red snapper), the Caterpillar Roll (barbequed eel and avocado wrapped with thinly sliced avocado and topped with spicy mayonnaise) and…

You can’t forget the “Fire Mountain Roll”. This time we opted to go only rolls route after the last few we focused on the sushi side of things. The food came out pretty quick with the sushi pizza first. It was a bit more spicy as per the description but I found the bed of rice way too hard/crunchy. I think they overcooked it in the deep fryer.

Can I declare Ichiban Sushi House’s spicy salmon sushi pizza the worst sushi pizza in Toronto?… I guess not, until we review every sushi restaurant in the city. However, this one was definitely the worst I’ve had so far. I didn’t even want the rest of the pieces that were sitting there. As you said, definitely too crunchy. Yikes. Not a good start.

The rest of the rolls were served together in a large serving plate. The presentation of all the rolls was nice, especially the caterpillar rolls which were the centre piece of the plate and actually did look like a caterpillar!
Too bad the Ichiban Sushi House didn’t deliver on that. Ok, the Caterpillar roll was actually quite good (I’ll give them that) but the others were not great at all. Spicy tuna roll: ‘meh’; Rainbow roll: ‘ok’; Fire Mountain roll: I didn’t taste anything there—even the texture I didn’t like.

The best out of the bunch was the caterpillar roll. The Fire roll to me was the worst and they didn’t really have any taste or “fire” to them at all. It looks like they just sprinkled some chili spice on it and that was it. I guess you could say they are passable. It looks like this place is going to fall into the “yet another Toronto sushi restaurant” category which are a dime a dozen here.

I’m a fan of free fruit. Despite that I’m going to have to give Ichiban Sushi House at Front and Wellington a not-so-big 4 out of 10. That’s even lower than ‘yet another Toronto sushi restaurant’, I believe. Head up and over a few blocks to Sakura Ichiban at Adelaide and Jarvis for a good sushi experience. Oh, and what’s with the height of the benches along the wall being so much higher than that of the chairs? So, if you sit along the wall on the bench you’re literally a foot higher than those in the chairs – and too high for the table. Weird.

Well the cantaloupe dessert is pretty much the worst for me. I am allergic to it so no instant +0.5 from me! In the end, not the most impressive experience by a long shot. In that area, I actually expected a lot better. 5/10 from me.

‘Plan A’ was to hit up Ninki in Scotia Plaza but my fellow reviewer decided to sit himself down at the Adelaide location. No worries, though, as my guess is this one is more for those wanting a casual sushi experience anyway. I could be wrong. Also, this one is open on weekends, I believe, where the Scotia Plaza location is not.

Once I was seated, I look around the restaurant and notice a poster saying “try our other place in Scotia Plaza” and realize that I am in the wrong restaurant! Anyways, this place has a more casual feel to it with a lot of bright colours that seems geared to towards the non formal dining.

It’s actually pretty much across the street from the Adelaide entrance, so not much of a walk required. The banner out front screams that they are now open on Sundays – and that Saturday and Sunday dinner is all you can eat. We were there on a Tuesday, however, so it was a la carte for us. Our waitress was quick to offer us something to drink. I went with a ‘large’ Asahi, although it seemed like a regular sized bottle to me.

There weren’t any signature Ninki rolls or dishes that we could have tried. This time we decided to mix it up a little bit and order some rolls as well as some sushi. Of course the obvious spicy tuna rolls and sushi pizza as our standard picks.
I’ll start with the sushi pizza. Actually, the sushi pizza I enjoyed, although I noticed it was covered in their special sauce that seemed to be used on other menu items as well. The sushi tray was far from fresh and the Green Dragon roll was nothing special. I think my biggest disappointment was the spicy tuna roll. The sauce on top looked pretty much like cheese whiz and the fish to rice ratio was way out of whack (as in too much rice).

Unfortunately, there was a lack of any special about the rolls. Seems that it’s easier just to slather their spicy sauce on them rather than actually prepare the sushi as it should be mixed with any sauce beforehand then rolled. The worst for me was the Unagi. It looked like it was just microwaved for the 10th time and tasted that way. Almost tasted like it was a sardine.

Not so much. Was there even any fish in it? I tasted and saw only rice.
That’s basically the trick that all the prepackaged sushi places do. You know the ones at food courts or mall kiosks where the sushi combos are made before hand and you pick what you want from the cooler. Always avoid these places because you basically pay for a small sliver of fish on top a large portion of rice. Unless of course you simply love rice!

So, what was good at Ninki Sushi? The service was prompt; the restaurant setting was alright; the sushi pizza was decent… What wasn’t: Pretty much everything we ate, minus the sushi pizza. Let’s just say it wasn’t the first sushi experience of 2010 I was looking for. Quite the opposite. Not impressed. Sorry Ninki, but you get 3/10 from me.

So, Bikkuri is a place I walk past pretty much every day on my way to King subway station, now that I no longer live in the Yonge-Bloor area. It’s only a block and a half east of Yonge, on King Street – across from the King Edward Hotel. It always seemed like a nice spot, and even has a patio out front. Only thing is I’ve never see it even half full. Maybe for lunch? Possibly. We met there at 7pm…

It’s very close to King Subway Station (yes I did take the subway there) and you really can’t miss it. Huge black and Bikkuri sign. When I arrived it wasn’t too busy and was seated by the window. Looking around, has some private rooms/booths as well for larger parties I guess.

Maybe it’s a lighting thing?!… Anyway, service was prompt and everything came out super quick! So, we went with the Salmon Sushi Pizza, a mixed sushi plate, Spicy Tuna Rolls, Shichimi Maki (spicy tuna, avocado tempura, tempura bits, wasabi tobiko), Martini Roll (tobiko, cucumber, BBQ salmon, wrapped with avocado) and I think one more.

Yeah it was lightning quick. Probably because it wasn’t that busy. More people started to trickle in here and there as the evening went on. I guess it’s hard to expect more on a Tuesday night. Your exactly right about the dishes. The first thing I noticed that was different was the Salmon Sushi Pizza. It wasn’t the usual deep fried rice base. The rice base was actually some kind of rice tempura. Different but still tasted pretty good. The rolls were all pretty decent the Shichimi Maki was extra spicy to me. This time more of the spicy sauce variety. This spiciness I prefer over the way Daio Japanese Restaurant does theirs.

The Sushi Pizza was good… Yes, the Shichimi Maki had some kick (actually quite a bit!). The Martini Rolls were decent but seemed to fall apart easily. I prefer when that doesn’t happen?! About mid way through dinner I noticed a small fly landed in my beer. Nothing that couldn’t be fished out with my trusty chop sticks. On that note, the beer selection is quite lacking, unless you’re big on Japanese beers. I went with the large Sapporo.

Ah yes the Martini Rolls! Presentation and taste was nice but just broke apart too easily. I was going to say that it’s due to your chopstick skills but it was happening to me as well, a seasoned chopstick user…so it must be the sushi chefs fault!

The jury is still out on that fly. Was it already in the glass or did it land there during the dinner?? I’ll give them a slight benefit of the doubt as there was a fly flying around at the end of the dinner so it’s possible it just dropped in on your beer.

It’s aways a bit weird when you have to flag a waiter/waitress down to GIVE them money. At least we get a few candies for our troubles that were included with the bill. Anyways, overall the Bikkuri was decent but nothing really stands out. Might be a good place to have private party dinners as they have private areas with pillows and it looks like you even remove your shoes for more “traditional” Japanese dinning. The prices were a bit more expensive than others but you can probably chalk that up to being in the Yonge and King Street area. I’ll have to add it to the ever growing list of “yet another Toronto sushi place” category. I give it a 7/10. Bonus points for getting another few candies(!) when the waitress returned with the credit card sheet to sign.
