Solo Sushi Bekkan is quite tiny, but the tiny ones are usually the best ones, I find. It’s not a place you would notice walking down Yonge Street, even though it’s only a few doors from Toronto’s main strip. I’m thinking it holds maybe 15 people at the most.

I agree with you though, sometimes these are the hidden gems. I know that I see this place almost everyday as it’s on my walking route to work and been meaning to check it out. When I first arrived, it was pretty much empty. When I was seated I noticed some nice little touches you don’t see at the standard “yet another sushi” restaurants: Cloth napkins and little rock holders for your chopsticks.
One of these days I’d like to try that one out. This time we went for sushi pizza, spicy tuna rolls, Yokohama rolls (salmon, cucumber, avocado, lettuce, spicy mayo) and a sushi plate (Sushi Yokohama Set: 10 pieces of Nigiri, 6 pieces of California Roll)

Oh, and I liked how he even placed our cloth napkins for us. I’ve never experienced that at a sushi place before. So far it was all class.
As we were there, the place started to fill up. Then again, due to the shear size of the place, adding a few more people will quickly make the place full. Full house = around 16 people.

Wild. Ok, to the food itself. Everything was super fresh. It came out in stages (unlike most places we go to). We would finish one dish and then the next would come out. So, if you want variety all at once this isn’t the place. My only real issue was the rice. It seemed to fall apart from the fish quite easily making a total mess of my soy sauce dish.
You can really tell the difference here. Also I noticed that the sushi was prepared in a more traditional way where there is some wasabi already in between the rice and the fish. I like that. Your right in that the rice was very soft and required a lot of chopstick skills to handle it properly without it breaking into pieces. After all the sushi restaurants we’ve reviewed so far, I had higher hopes for your skills. A bit disappointed my friend. The proof is in the soy sauce dish!
So, yes, the food was quite good, the service excellent, and I really enjoyed the small/personal environment. Our server/owner/whomever even seemed to like that I was taking photos of everything and brought over something they store in the glass cabinet for me to photograph. Apparently it’s a customer favourite! Near the end of our meal we overheard (it’s kind of hard not too in this place) our server being quite animated when talking with another table. Something about ‘All You Can Eat’ sushi places…
The chef got very heated in that discussion. What I got out of it was that the “All you can eat” sushi idea originally came from Vancouver and he simply hates it. The quality of fish suffers and an overall lack of sushi skill that is required to prepare it. I think he mentioned something about seasonal fish or maybe overpopulation. Not exactly sure but what I do know is he hates the idea with a passion.

This place is pretty much the opposite of an ‘All You Can Eat’ place anyway (and, yes, that’s a good thing). After our last dish we waited for a bit and we were then served complimentary dessert. I didn’t really care for it but it’s free so what the heck. The total bill before tax was $58.50. That includes a $10 beer. Sixty-six and change after tax. I was totally stuffed once it was over.
Anyways, it was a rice pudding kind of thing and was nice finish to an overall excellent meal. Solo Sushi Bekkan is an easy recommend for me and especially over the other 3 sushi restaurants in the area. 9 / 10.

The rice was a bit messy but the freshness and service were impeccable. I also liked how he basically encouraged me to take more photos. Ditto for his disdain for low-quality sushi! You can tell they really care here – both with the food and the service. Skip the Yonge Street sushi strip north of College Street and come up a block or two to Grosvenor and Yonge instead. You won’t be disappointed.

We ordered the salmon sushi pizza, a combo plate of sushi and rolls, and a couple separate roll orders – including spicy tuna.

I am noticing this trend of restaurants putting these up more and more now. Not really sure why. I can understand if it’s a sports bar but doesn’t really fit in a sushi restaurant. Oh well, at least I’ll be up to date on any “breaking news”! I think we also had some kind of UFO roll or something like that. Too tempting not to order. The service was very prompt but probably because there weren’t too many customers that night. Unfortunately for you, they were still in the process of getting their liquor license so I guess it’s gonna be green tea and cokes.

There is really no reason for me to go back to Sushi Supreme Fusion. I found it average at best, despite decent service and a decent looking interior. If you’re in the Yonge and Wellesley area and are looking for a new sushi spot, the just reviewed Sushi Hana is a better bet. It’s just north of Wellesley on Yonge. Could Sushi Supreme go the way of Sunset Grill (and others that have had a brief stay at this location)? 6.5/10.

You can file this one under the “yet another sushi place” category among the hundreds of other sushi places popping up everywhere. There really isn’t anything special or memorable that would make me want to go back. From the average tasting food and the standard menu, there’s just too many better places to go to instead. I actually kind of wished Sunset Grill was still around with better service of course. Oh well, Sushi (not so) Supreme Sushi gets a 6 out of 10 from me.

The first thing I noticed was the atmosphere. It has an attractive, modern decor that you don’t really find at Yonge Street sushi places. A nice change for sure.

I agree, the decor was nice although when I walked in, the wind chime/bell hanging above the door was too low since it hit my head… and I am not that tall.

You may get head damage entering Sushi Hana. Service was quick and polite. The ‘booth’ we picked was a bit uncomfortable, though. The back of the bench literally moves if no one is sitting behind you to hold it in place (there are other seating options though – so, stay away from the booth-style seating in the centre row).

You were lucky you didn’t have to share the back with anymore. Me, not so lucky. It’s not the end of the world but still a bit annoying. Something to avoid the next time. Anyways, the menu was easy to read and had a lot of options. I am a big lover of variety and they did have quite a few types of combinations. Of course we go with the standard sushi pizza but this time we decided to go with one of their rolls combos (you remember the item number?) which comprised of spicy tuna rolls, california rolls, spider rolls and dynamite rolls. (one more that I can’t remember, it was the one with just cucumber I think.)

I mean, it’s not ‘bad’ but not great either. After that, the rolls came out, and I must say the presentation was definitely impressive – the best I’ve seen by far. I enjoyed all the rolls except for the Spider roll (pretty sure that was the one). Spicy tuna, Dynamite, Kappa, California were all good. The Spider roll was better once I ran it through some of the ‘presentational’ sauces – for lack of a better description (Seriously, how did I ever get a sushi-review gig?!). Again, service was great – and courteous. My Coronas came with the standard sushi-place-lemon – again.

Might have been slightly overcooked because the pizza was more crunchy than I am use to. Presentation of the rolls plate was also very impressive. Looking around a few other people, it seems that’s the “norm” on some of their dishes which I always like to see. Care in presentation usually means care in the food as well. I enjoyed all the rolls including the Spider rolls. I am a big fan of soft shell crab which I am thinking you aren’t since you didn’t quite appreciate it as much as I did.

I usually hate the appetizer items at Japanese restaurants but this one was really good… Post-sushi was the complimentary orange, which was a nice touch. Sushi Hana got busier the longer we were there – although nowhere near capacity. They also go the extra mile for birthdays, apparently. One group had sparklers placed in (not sure – I just saw sparklers!) brought to their table as they sung ‘Happy Birthday’.

Almost forgot about the appetizer noodle soup bowl we got as a free appetizer. Hopefully this is norm rather than a promotional item. It tasted very good and was a nice surprise to start off the meal. I’ll have to check it out on a more usual dinner night, eg. Fri or Sat to see if the place is doing any better. This location has seen a few other Japanese/Korean Fusion restaurants come and go. Can we say “Witches Table” that I think lasted for maybe a week and then I believe “Soban” before that. Sushi Hana has a tough act to follow but it seems it’s focused on sushi rather than the sushi/Korean food combo that the previous restaurants offered.

Service and food presentation was fantastic. Our seating was a bit sketch (although the restaurant itself was quite nice). The food was pretty good – minus the sushi pizza (I think you’re right on the Spider roll – I’m likely not a fan of the soft shell crab). I’m going 8/10.

I just wonder how long it’ll last as the history of the location isn’t so good. Recommend that you do not sit in the middle section, especially if it’s busy as you’ll be bouncing back and forth with whoever is sitting behind you.

People did start to trickle in and it looks like it’s also a goto place for takeout as a lot of people were popping in to pick up their orders. The food was quite good and fresh including the special Green Day Roll which was basically a roll wrapped in avocado. What we did realize as we were eating was…. we didn’t order enough! As it turned out, the Volcano Roll was very good. Grilled Salmon with “special sauce”. The Rainbow roll, standard among most sushi places was also quite good. It was definitely enough to fill us up.

In fact, I made sure to grab the last one! I really enjoyed the Tokyo Sushi House. It’s got a different atmosphere than most sushi places in downtown Toronto. That and the service and food are great as well. I’m not the only one that thinks that apparently. The walls are covered with photos of those who agree. I didn’t really study them, but I assume they are of the celebrity type. Hence why they didn’t ask to take our photos, I suppose.

Can’t seem to remember which ones though but there were a lot of them signed personally. Overall a fun, cozy little place that I can see myself going back to. Eight erupting volcanoes out of 10. One thing I should note is I still couldn’t figure out where the washrooms were. As we were leaving I figured I’d spot it on the way out. No such luck.

I did notice, however, the piece of clothing tacked to the wall with the slogan ‘Sun, Sex & Sushi’. There you go. Enjoy the ‘old school’ bill as well. It’s part of the overall charm I guess (yes, I said ‘charm’). I would recommend Tokyo Sushi House to anyone. If you want a nice quiet spot, Tuesdays at 7 is, apparently, the time to go! 8.5 non-alcoholic drinks out of 10.

Just like just about every Japanese sushi restaurant here in Toronto, it’s either run by Chinese or Korean. This time it’s my Chinese brothers. So of course we get better service. I love the green tea so I always go with it. You can also tell a lot about places by their green tea and how hot it is.

I’m pretty sure this was the place that had a few specials listed at the tables. It was all pretty good from what I remember. The beer selection was lacking, though. The place isn’t especially nice or anything but if the sushi is good…

It was something like a ‘maki combo’ or something like that with a bunch of different regular type rolls. It was good but I am thinking we should have gone with more of the specialty rolls rather than the tradional maki variety.
