So I got a flyer in the mail the other day from a new sushi restaurant that just opened up in my area called “Wow! Sushi”. With a name like that, I couldn’t resist suggesting we go check this one out.

With a name like that and being just off Yonge Street it had disappointment written all over it. Once I stepped in, however, I had a better feeling: Small – holding maybe 25 people tops – and not grubby at all, with staff in traditional dress.

I did like that the chef and waiter immediately greeted and bowed to when I entered. Nice touch. I also noticed on the menu is that they offer the Omakase which isn’t normally available at your typical cheap sushi joint.

The rolls selected were spicy tuna, unagi with avocado, and one of the specialty rolls (The Wow! Sushi roll, I believe, but that was later changed to another of the specialty rolls after the chef informed us that our first choice was very similar to another roll we ordered).

As we said each item to order, the waiter acknowledged each time with a “hai” (yes in Japanese) which was kind of cool to me. Not long after we ordered, he returned with a complementary clam soup made with sake broth that’s not even on the menu from what I could tell. Very nice.

I was pleasantly surprised. I think it was the presentation that won me over. Had to try it. Yes, the fact that it was complimentary was nice.

Every item brought to our table throughout the night was explained to us in detail, complete with a bow and a ‘thank you’. I instantly got the feeling that they really did care that we were there and they were almost honoured that people were eating at their establishment. This was unprecedented among all of our sushi reviews. I’ve never experienced that. Frankly, I was blown away. It showed not only that they really cared about the food, but they also really cared about their customers.

I agree. When he the waiter brought the sushi appetizer, I expected the standard, generic looking sushi. Salmon, mock crab and that old shrimp slice you always get. Not this time. I was blown away by the look, quality and freshness of the fish. When he went through each one telling us where they were from, wow indeed. One thing that I do remember is that the butter fish is naturally very oily. To combat that, they lightly sear it. Amazing stuff.

I was thinking the same thing. Next came out the Spicy Tuna Rolls and the Unagi Rolls. Nice presentation for both and thought the rolls tasted great too. While we were eating the rolls, the sushi chef actually looked over and told us that we should change our “Wow Roll” order to the Japango Roll because the Wow Roll has some similar ingredients to the Unagi Roll we were eating and recommended we switch so that we have some variety. Sure why not!
Ah right “Japango” — I forgot the name. I wasn’t overly thrilled with the Japango to be honest. Not horrible, but I wasn’t raving either. The Spicy Tuna was decent but I though the spice was too overbearing on the taste (have had better). The Unagi roll was nice – no complaints on that one.

This time around, it was cut and placed into individual slices rather on a long serving plate. After all the sushi pizzas we’ve had, this is actually the first time I’ve seen it presented like that. It tasted pretty good, on par with most places.

Yes, the sushi pizza was fairly on par with others we have had. The differing presentation was a nice touch though. I’m surprised we’ve never seen it served that way before.

Once we were finished eating, to top off the meal, the waiter brings over a complementary black sesame ice cream with fig tempura. Also used some cool grinder to sprinkle something… ( do you know what it was? ) Nice dessert and another pleasant surprise. Since this place has been open for just a month or so, I doubt expect the freebies to continue as I am sure it’s more of a promotional tool. I’ll take it. And of course you know my rule for getting free dessert!

Yeah, the complimentary dessert was nice. I believe you mentioned at the table that the table next to us also got complimentary dessert but something different. I guess you could say that’s yet another personal touch. I didn’t really care for the fig tempura but that’s fine.
There was discussion via another table about a case on the wall where they keep the chop sticks of “regulars”. That’s wild! Not sure how “regular” you have to be but yet another way ‘Wow! Sushi’ are differentiating themselves.
Yes the chopstick board for regulars is pretty bad ass. After talking with the waiter some more, he mentioned that they used to work at the Japango on Elizabeth Street, near University and Dundas for over 5 years and have decided to open their own restaurant. Good luck to them because I think this place is great from the quality sushi to the friendly service. The place is a bit small but cozy. I will definitely be back and hope to one day have a pair of my own chopsticks on wall. 9.5/10.

The service was the finest we’ve ever experienced (although I wasn’t a fan of having to ask for the bill after a decent wait): The passion for the food was second to none – explaining every dish in detail when presenting it to the table; expressing gratitude to the customer in the delivery of every dish and when order taking… The nigiri appetizer was fantastic. I didn’t find the maki over and above other places, however. That is my one negative – they could have been better. Despite that, ‘Wow! Sushi’ should be on everyone’s list: 8.5/10.

We met up on a Tuesday at 6pm to try out Masa, a sushi restaurant that heavily promotes their All You Can Eat lunch. We opted for the menu ordering, however.

Hehe…True, from the outside it doesn’t look like anything special but once you get inside it’s quite large – and the atmosphere is great. Very nice. Too bad the outside of the restaurant doesn’t reflect that. We were seated right away and service was prompt the entire night.

I can understand a standard North American type restaurant but a sushi restaurant seems a bit odd. The menu was pretty large with lots of photos. The waitress left us to look over the menu to figure out what to order. She came back to take our food and drink order at once rather than the normal drinks first. I asked for green tea and you ordered a coke?

Sooo, you suggested going all rolls this time, and I was on board with that. We picked 5 different rolls along with the spicy salmon sushi pizza (of course!). Our roll order was: Spicy Tuna Roll (tuna, green onions, tempura butter), Rainbow Roll (crab, cucumber, avocado, tobiko, tuna, salmon and white fish), Red Dragon (deep fried shrimp, cucumber, avocado, flying fish egg with map), Fresh Mango Salmon Roll (mango, salmon, cucumber, crab, mayo and tobiko with fresh mango sauce), Toronto Roll (eel, avocado, salmon skin, tobiko with sweet sauce)

First out, I believe, were the Spicy Tuna and Toronto rolls. I thought the Spicy Tuna were decent but nothing special. For the Toronto rolls, I’ll say the same. They were fresh but I noticed one of the last pieces of the Toronto roll was mostly rice.

Nice catch! I agree, it was all fine but nothing really out of the ordinary or special about them. It’s looking more and more like a “just another sushi restaurant”. The sushi pizza and the Mango Salmon Roll came out. Tasted pretty good as well and the Sushi pizza had my kind of spiciness level. A welcome change considering the last few places have been a bit too spicy for me.

Yes, the sushi pizza was more like the typical ‘Yonge Street’ sushi pizza style. It was decent, but nothing special. I found the Mango Salmon rolls quite good, actually. I was surprised. The last time I had a mango roll I wasn’t a fan, but Masa pulls off a nice one. The other roll I really enjoyed was the Red Dragon.

Agreed…If you were one of our first reviews you may have gotten away with a better grade than you would have today. As for the Rainbow Roll, glad you mentioned the size, the middle couple of pieces are crazy big. I had one near the beginning of the meal and pulled it off and then attempted another right at the end. It wasn’t pretty, as I’m sure you saw. I nearly gagged (true). Not sure what was with that, but they were far too big. That kind of killed my sushi experience at Masa, to be honest. I suppose I shouldn’t have attempted it but, really, they should be making them a size that you can eat properly.

It was a scary moment and I thought that I’d have to pull the out heimlich maneuver! Ok maybe not that scary… I agree, I think it ruins the experience when they make huge size pieces so you spend more time trying to chew than actually taste and enjoy the sushi. Oh well, in the end, I think Masa is a decent place. Very nice decor and a lot more space than you would think from the outside. For me, it falls under the “yet another sushi restaurant” category. Not bad but not great. 7/10 for me. I did notice on the way out they that have some kind of hibachi or teppanyaki kind of service as well which are always fun so maybe worth checking out.

The restaurant atmosphere and service were great. Can’t complain there. This maki was decent – some rolls better than others, as I already mentioned. My near death experience, however, not so great. I’ll join you at 7/10 with a warning to stay away from the Rainbow Roll.

Better take back all your slags directed at the TTC! I got from Markham (where I work – I’d never live there — lets make that clear) to Yonge & Bloor in decent time. The surprise about the size of this restaurant I think is because it’s part of that big IBM building. Thus, it seems like it would be larger. There’s a bunch of tables and then a bar in the corner. The menu was definitely a step up from what we’re used to. I’m sure the food is too, but I mean the actual menu! The guy sitting next to us had his notebook out so we were wondering about wi-fi access. Of course, we didn’t ask so really I’ve just added a useless fact to this review?! As I mentioned earlier, the menu has a range of Japanese selections, with a separate menu for maki and sushi items. I didn’t even know they still brewed it, but Labatt Ice was on the menu, so I had one of those. Brought back some memories… Memories from well before I’d ever eaten sushi…

I am getting burned by the fact that I expect the TTC to be late and they are actually on time! Don’t worry, it won’t last. Also, it’s one of those things where the closer you are, the more likely you will be late for whatever reason. The menu was pretty classy and the place seems more like a genuine Japanese restaurant and that of course means no Sushi Pizza on the menu. I guess it’s not the big hit in Japan as it is in Toronto. Based on what I see and hear from the Sushi chef in the corner, I think he is actually Japanese! A rarity among Sushi restaurants in Toronto as most seemed to be either Korean or Chinese. Figure that out. True about Labatt ice. It brought back memories of good old Molson XXX with the higher than normal alcohol content. Whatever happened to that piss tasting beer? Anyways, the menu seems a bit more expensive than most and the standard items are there. No “crazy” or specialty type rolls on the menu this time.

Lucky them. Final points about the place itself: They have a rack to hang your coat, and play soft jazz music – i.e., this isn’t Yonge & Wellesley sushi! Oh, beer comes with a glass, but don’t expect a quick refill offer – you’ll have to specifically have to ask for one. Now, for the food. First item is a plate of sashimi (8 pieces) which was not cut thinly like most places. A lot of them were almost small rectangular pieces.

Hmm I believe I predicted that :) The other rolls were very good as well. They weren’t kidding about the SPICY tuna. Had some nice zip to it and I expect the same with the soon to arrive spicy salmon roll. The second roll we ordered was some kind shrimp tempura roll. Both were very good. I also believe you had to ask for a refill for your empty glass? I see a pattern here as that’s pretty much the norm at sushi places. The green tea constantly gets refilled but the beer… that’s another story.

Very good. Shrimp tempura rolls were decent as well. Overall, you definitely can’t go wrong with Ichiriki. Great rolls, friendly staff, and a nice little setting. The bill was quite comparable to other places we go to, as well.

Rolls were great and I agree with you that you really can’t go wrong with the place. The atmosphere, sushi chef and menu are on the more “traditional” side of things and the prices are a bit more but the bill wasn’t as big as I thought it would be which is always a welcome surprise. I give it 8.5 out of 10. I think I would have bumped it to 9 but I must admit, I kind of wished they had some more unique and creative types of rolls that some of the more “nontraditional” places provide. Still a great place but remember it’s not open TUESDAY nights!

It was a bit cramped but it’s a good sign if it’s busy. Normally means the food is pretty good. I think we also got the spicy tuna rolls as well. We got the spicy salmon rolls as well but when we asked the waitress to confirm if the dish we got was that, I could barely understand her and after a few tries, I just said “sure sounds good, thanks” One thing that I remember, and probably always will, was the chopstick skills by my fellow writer with the sushi pizza. I think if we look at just about all the sushi menus, we’ll see lots of typos and classic Chinglish. ESL is big these days. Speaking of menus, seems they have a pretty good selection of combos. I noticed that the price of rolls is maybe $1 or $2 cheaper than normal. I figure it’s because you’ll get 6 pieces rather than 8. We’ll see. Obviously we’ll get the customary sushi pizza and what do you think about going for their “specially named/designed” rolls that we see on the menu?

The one I couldn’t think the name of had to be a ‘highway’ name. Ok, but not a Toronto highway. Yeah! apparently you looked hungry! The sushi pizza came out pretty quick followed by the maki a bit later. The pizza was decent. Different from the others we’ve had but decent none the less. The spicy tuna rolls were super tasty (and, yes, spicy!) and I thought the beef ones were pretty good as well. The ‘Route 66’ rolls were decent as well, although not as good as the others. That leaves the ‘Yummi, Yummi’ which has shrimp, cucumber and something else (I can’t remember!). Turns out, not so yummy. It was, by far, the worst item we had. I wouldn’t order that one again. The rest I would though.

Still have something against ordering cooked beef maki. Yummi Yummi was a huge disappointment. It’s basically a glorified California Roll. Maybe next time I should actually read the description but I was sold by the name alone! It looks like the maki is 6 pieces, hence the price. I am still hungry so feel like grabbing another roll?

Overall, I like Aji Sai. I was leaning toward at least an 8 out of 10, but the ‘Yummi-rolls’ are still leaving a, ummm, bad taste: 7 rolls out of 10.

Based on what we ordered, I would give it a 7 (not so) yummi rolls out of 10 for pretty much the same reason. But I think it’s almost unfair since we went outside the norm picking some different dishes. I have a feeling if we went with “the usual” it would be an 8. Oh well maybe next time.

At least got served hot green tea right away to warm up because it was freezing.

Since the heat wasn’t on, warming my hands around a mug of green tea seemed necessary. This place didn’t seem like the typical sushi place though: Padded booth seating and a carpeted floor… and lots of space, unlike many places that jam as many tables in a small space as possible.

Pretty standard stuff but noticed that at this place, the rolls are 6 pieces rather than 8 pieces. Cheaper? Maybe I’ll get the calculator out… maybe not. Taped on the wall the “Tuna Sushi Specials” that looks like it’s about 1 or 2 bucks off. As we start to order our items, I notice we get the waitress that doesn’t write down anything – my greatest fear.

The white guy got to choose the two off the regular menu. Sure enough, being white, I chose two items that were fairly similar, which the waitress wasted no time pointing out. So, we redid the second of the two, I believe. Oh, and I ordered up a Corona (which has now become sushi-eating tradition for me, I suppose).

Don’t usually drink alcohol in the public due to the “Asian Glow”. Still have to get around to trying that Pepcid AC trick! Another tradition: Sushi Pizza which I swear I think is a Toronto only dish. For some reason, I don’t see some real Japanese Sushi chef making one. As per usual, our sushi chefs are either Chinese or Korean.

I’m intrigued. While you think of that I’ll rant about how sushi places seem to always serve Corona with a lemon (in this case two lemons – bonus?) instead of the usual lime. So far of the places we’ve reviewed, I’m 1 for 5 or so on the Lime Count.

Well basically, some of us Asians are allergic to alcohol. Something about missing an enzyme to break it down properly. Hence we get very red and flush. Apparently Pepcid AC helps to reduce that flushing. Thanks to the power of Google, us Asians can now get hammered just like everyone else! Anyways, on to the food. The rolls came out first in one large plate: Tuna Spicy Dragon roll, QEW Roll and the Gold Dragon Roll.

Living up to their name, the QEW Rolls weren’t that great. Maybe this white guy isn’t a huge fan of eel. The other two were decent, although they all seemed a bit soft, coming apart far to easily…

Didn’t really notice that but then again my friend, I think you need to work on your chopstick skills cause I see that you struggling with those “soft rolls”. Dare I say it, need a fork? At least there’s no shortage of soy sauce as it’s perhaps the biggest bottle I’ve ever seen, definitely a two fister. I agree with you that the QEW Roll did live up to their name but the other two were pretty good. Now arrives the Spicy Tuna Sushi Pizza. It’s the biggest I’ve seen too and served on some kind of fish shaped plate. It’s got a pile of those crunchy tempura bits all over it.

I’ll let you know about the fork. Yeah, the soy sauce was a biggie. Not sure what that is all about. I nearly repeated the infamous Soy Sauce Incident from Sushi Club – nearly. The Spicy Tuna Sushi Pizza wasn’t horrible, but wasn’t the best I’ve had (and that’s a short list!). Oh, if you want your favourite seating spot in the back right of the restaurant, no dice. There’s an aquarium sitting on the table there. What, did they just move in?
