We&#8217;ve been talking about trying out Hiro for a long time now. I walk past it pretty much every day, living in the <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/category/king-jarvis/">King East</a> area. The online reviews always seem to be really mixed on this sushi establishment. The die-hard fans on one end, praising the sushi quality, and on the other end, those who warn to stay away due to the service. Then our new friend Gregg shot us a <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/2009/10/sakura-ichiban/#comment-400">comment</a> and an <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/contact/">email</a> urging us to visit Hiro and report back. I guess that was the push we needed, so we met up at Hiro on a Tuesday evening at 5:30 after work.

We arrive at 5:30pm and it’s empty at the moment but I notice a few “reserved” signs on some of the tables. We are seated by the knife display on the side and handed their menu. First thing I noticed is that the menus are basically crusty old pieces of paper that have obviously had water/soy sauce/crap spilled on them. For such a “high end” place, why can’t they invest a couple of bucks in laminated them or something?

The inside of Hiro is really nothing to write home about. People don&#8217;t come to Hiro for the atmosphere. Actually, how would we know: We were seated in the narrow corridor that is the front of the restaurant, even though, I believe, there were some non-reserved tables available further in. Anyway, service started off well. The green tea and Asahi beer arrived promptly and our waitress poured the beer into the glass at the table &#8212; a nice touch.<br />

You can’t get a “Queen Street Roll” here! We opted to go with some sushi and a few rolls. For a sushi platter, the price was stated as $30-40, which I hate. 10-1 says that when we get the bill, it’ll be $40! We also went with the spicy tuna rolls and the tempura rolls. Knowing that the higher prices normally means less fish at a place like this I decided to ask the waitress if our order was enough for the two of us. Little did I know what would happen next.

Our waitress left the table in search of an answer to what you would think would be an easy question to respond to. She consulted with another waitress a few feet away from us - in what I assume was Japanese. The discussion went on for at least a minute (literally). True, they could have been talking about anything other than the question at hand (actually, I think I&#8217;m convinced of this) but regardless she returned and stated that, yes, we had ordered enough for two to dine.

Oh well, on to the food. The sushi platter and the rolls came out relatively quickly at that point. There was really no other customers at that point so I couldn’t imagine things taking that long. People did start to trickle as the evening went on. The rolls looked a bit small but the sushi platter looked really interesting and great. It was not your standard sushi platter as there were a number of items I didn’t even recognize. This was a “chefs” choice so it’s great to try Hiro’s sushi picks.

How things have changed from the early reviews. You&#8217;re right though, the sushi is probably one of the best and most unique I’ve tried. Nice touches include the wasabi already prepared in the sushi as well as the little soy sauce container thing. There was no additional wasabi given like other restaurants as to me, what was included was the right amount. A little skimpy on the provided ginger though.

Huge (I almost want to us all caps, but I&#8217;ll refrain) disappointment. Even the &#8216;how can you screw that up&#8217; spicy tuna rolls weren&#8217;t good. I found the tempura rolls were a bit better, but not by much. A definite lack of flavour and too much rice. The rolls that accompanied the nigiri platter were even worse. One in particular was simply uneatable.<br />

By this time, the restaurant was getting a bit more busy and some of those reserved tables were being filled. What it also meant was we weren&#8217;t going to be satisfying that hunger any time soon.

Sure she couldn&#8217;t control the speed of the food (our second nigiri platter too forever to arrive, by the way) but just in general we were forgotten about &#8212; despite this being a really tiny place. Refill offers? Nope. I spent the rest of the meal rationing the remaining beer I had. Thing is, it wasn&#8217;t only us. A table right next to ours was filled by three guys who looked like they were business partners. One of them resorted to flailing his arms to get the attention of the waitress. This happened more than once. The Hiro dining experience just took a turn for the worst.

Odd. So, the second sushi plate was a bit different make up than the first, but it was pretty much as good. The rolls on the side were absolutely awful, however. All that&#8217;s left is to try to flag down a waitress and get the bill.

I realized that you have to basically stand up and walk to the hostess area at the front to get their attention and flag them down. For whatever reason, they congregate there and do lot shuffling and doing some kind of paper work. Now the million dollar question is, how much did they charge us for the sushi platters? Says on the menu $30-40 and there’s no chance in hell it’ll be $30!

Thus our meal comes to just over $115 - almost double what we normally spend on a night of sushi. Thing is, I was still hungry after this. So, if getting the bill wasn&#8217;t hard enough (we actually had to ask for it twice, by the way), actually getting them to take my Mastercard became another chore. Yep, I had to resort to taking it to them as we were more than ready to get out of there.<br />

Why bother putting a range when it’s obvious it’ll be at the higher end. It’s like asking an employer, how much do you want to get paid per hour if you had a range between $30-40/hr? Come on… Pretty much had enough of waiting so it’s better to chase down the waitress so we can get the hell out of there. We arrived at 5:30pm and by the time we left, it was almost 8pm. Probably 2 hours of that was waiting. Admittedly, the sushi was probably one of the best I’ve had in Toronto but the whole experience was probably one of the worst and left a sour taste in my mouth. It’s a shame really and something that seems like such an easy fix. For whatever reason, Hiro doesn’t want to bother fixing it. I guess the old saying is true in this case: “Don’t be a HIRO”. 4/10.

Sooo, if you&#8217;re Hiro, why not get people in there that care about the service and then you become a huge draw, no? I mean, why have your restaurant sit empty at 5:30pm on a Tuesday when it could be full with happy, well served, customers. Then again, the maki is a mess, too. Sorry, not good. Sure, the nigiri was incredible but I need to be treated properly when I go out to eat &#8212; especially if you&#8217;re going to charge a premium and still leave me hungry. I found a <a href="http://forums.redflagdeals.com/hiro-sushi-review-153246/#post1535367" rel="nofollow">thread</a> that states that Hiro doesn&#8217;t let the waitresses keep their tips. If that&#8217;s the case, that may partly explain the horrendous service. People may say &#8216;you have to sit at the bar&#8230;&#8217; &#8212; sooo, if I sit at the tables, poor service is acceptable? I&#8217;ll never eat at Hiro Sushi again: 3/10.

We noticed this place as we left the <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/2010/06/fujiyama-japanese-restaurant/">Fujiyama Restaurant</a> which is basically right next door. Etsu has a much newer, modern look to it and we had planned to try this place next. As it turned out, we also got an email recommendation to try Etsu out. It became obvious to us that that Etsu would be our next stop.<br />
<br />
I arrived around 6pm and was the only customer there. It probably didn’t help that the G20 was getting under way so downtown Toronto was a lot quieter than normal.

The restaurant is quite nice inside. It&#8217;s fairly modern with art on the wall and what is likely CBC Radio playing on the stereo. The waitress was dressed in traditional Japanese wear. Outside it&#8217;s nicely landscaped with bushes and flowers. Visually, Etsu earns full marks. They&#8217;ve really done a nice job to make it a very comfortable place to enjoy sushi. Outside, among the landscaping, there are a few <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/tag/patio/">patio</a> seats to enjoy if you don&#8217;t mind being too cramped.

Very narrow and to me just a weird spot. Anyways, have to agree with you about the place though. Very classy, even with chopstick holders! Perhaps the best was the sushi chef staring at his laptop in the back table! Not sure what it is on <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/tag/baldwin-street/">Baldwin</a> but so far, both places the sushi chef must be addicted to the internet or something!

Who knows, the but sushi chefs on Baldwin are definitely &#8216;online&#8217;. Let&#8217;s hope they&#8217;re not looking up &#8216;<a href="http://www.google.com/#hl=en&#038;source=hp&#038;q=how+to+prepare+sushi">How to prepare sushi</a>&#8216;. So, we decided to order the <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/tag/sushi-pizza/">sushi pizza</a> (of course!), a dish of spicy rolls (various) and a dish of <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/tag/nigiri/">nigiri</a> with a few rolls added in.<br />

After all the times we’ve ordered the restaurants own named roll, one thing that seems to be consistent among them is that they are always one of their more expensive rolls! By adding their name to a roll, they also add a couple of bucks to it as well. Goes with the territory I guess. Oh well, as expected, the dishes came out pretty quick (since we are the only ones there). First out was the sushi pizza.<br />

The spicy roll set (<a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/tag/spicy-tuna-roll/">spicy tuna</a>, <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/tag/spicy-salmon-roll/">spicy salmon</a> and spicy shrimp tempura) came out next along with the Etsu Rolls. The Etsu rolls were okay but I really didn’t like any of the spicy rolls at all. They seemed too salty and had way too much rice. I was very disappointed by the spicy rolls. I don’t think I can remember a time where they’ve ever been that bad at any of the other places we’ve been too.<br />

Not at Etsu. Agreed on the &#8216;too much rice&#8217; comment. They simply were not good. We rarely leave sushi uneaten &#8212; especially not spicy rolls &#8212; but this time we did. The worst spicy rolls the <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca">Sushi Toronto</a> team has ever endured, I would say. The Etsu rolls I didn&#8217;t like at all either. I can&#8217;t describe it, really, but they didn&#8217;t taste like anything. Not impressed. The dish you put your name on you want to make something special. I&#8217;m not sure what Etsu was thinking on this one.

I first thought wow we ordered too much but in reality, it was that we just didn’t want to eat the food anymore. We had to ask the waitress to box it up. In truth, I couldn’t even eat it later so it actually just ended up in the garbage. It wasn’t good fresh so imagine how it would taste a day later!

As you know my cardinal rule, an immediate 0.5 bump up in the rating with free <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/tag/dessert/">dessert</a>! I checked out the washroom this time and also found a few more surprises there. Namely the big bottle of Scope with disposable dixie cups as well as a <a href="http://www.google.ca/#hl=en&#038;safe=off&#038;q=yoyo+toilet+seat">futuristic digital toilet</a> with all kinds of buttons, etc! When I came back, I had to tell you that you needed to see it for yourself!

I did not, however, test out the, as you call it, futuristic toilet. It looks like I may have needed to read the manual first.<br />
<br />

<br />
So, Etsu gets full marks for &#8216;look&#8217; of the restaurant itself. Bonus marks for the bathroom amenities! The service is great and the &#8216;add ons&#8217; like the free dessert are most welcome, as well. What happened with the sushi, however? Aside from the sushi pizza, I didn&#8217;t like much else. Sorry, Etsu: 3.5/10.

Even with the extra 0.5 bump, still get’s a 3.0 / 10 from me. Avoid. Another tip, if you see the sushi chef on a laptop, go somewhere else! We&#8217;re slowly venturing off the <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/tag/yonge-street">Yonge Street sushi strip</a>, which is likely a good thing. As I made my way there on foot, I noticed there were a few other sushi restaurants on Baldwin. Possibly future reviews for <a href="http://www.sushitoronto.ca">Sushi Toronto</a>.

I believe there were a total of 4 different sushi restaurants within 2 blocks of each other. Fujiyama happens to be at the one end of the “restaurant row”. I was the very first customer of the night.

Basically something to gnaw on while you decide on what to order. It was a pretty full menu but I do detect the do-it-yourself home ink jet printer feel of the menus. Anyways, we decided to go with a mix of sushi and rolls settling on a Sushi/Sashimi platter and sushi pizza. Along with that, we had to follow the standard rule if they have a signature named roll, we must get it. Therefore Fujiyama roll must be ordered.

It&#8217;s actually one of the &#8216;Love Boat&#8217; combinations, so, umm, perfect for us. The Fujiyama Special Roll runs $9.95 and the sushi pizza $6.95. Other possible menu options include the Skydome Roll, the CN Tower Roll, and the Boston Roll. I suppose it is difficult to come up with names when there are a zillion rolls to name. First up came the soup and salad. I can&#8217;t complain about the salad. It was decent.</p>

First thing I noticed was they didn’t skimp out on the sushi or sashimi. It looked pretty good and tasted decent as well.</p>

Oh, the sushi pizza wasn&#8217;t great in my books. It was too crispy for my liking. Also the toppings seemed a bit much. It definitely did not look like a healthy dish! The service was good. It seemed she forgot the sushi pizza in the initial order, but no biggie. Orange wedges accompanied the bill. Oh, I should mention there&#8217;s a small patio out front for those of you wanting to catch some rays while you eat. I&#8217;m giving Fujiyama a 7/10. &#8216;Yet another&#8217;, indeed.</p>

Oh and I decided to venture to the washrooms in the basement and they were not the cleanest. Oh well, as I was coming up the stairs I noticed the sushi chef on a laptop at the back of the restaurant. So I guess it’s about time we ventured a little off of <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/tag/yonge-street/">Yonge Street</a> this time around. As I walked on Adelaide from University, I forgot how many food places there really were here in this area. The very popular Burrito Boyz (good burritos, crazy busy and the worst service possible) and that fairly new poutine place. YUZU is right between them and the Crocodile Rock.

As I walked along Adelaide from the east side I went by some our past reviews from the Adelaide stretch: <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/2010/04/nami-restaurant/">Nami</a>, <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/2010/01/ninki-sushi/">Ninki</a> and <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/2010/02/fune-japanese-restaurant/">Fune</a>. Some better than others! Anyway, this day was all about YUZU – which we figured may be a nice place based on their sleek Web site.

It did get a little busier as the night went on but by no means full when we left. The decor and ambiance of YUZU definitely exuded a “higher end” dining experience. The prices on the menu also reflected this as most items were easily a few dollars more than the local neighborhood sushi joint. I am curious if the food itself lives up to hype as we’ve been disappointed before.

The $17 price tag that goes with it not so much. I think it would be good to get in a group as a crowd pleaser but beyond that, I doubt it would be in my regular order. Next out was the Spicy Tuna and Spicy Scallop rolls on one dish and the Sushi Deluxe on the other. I must admit that the presentation of the Sushi Deluxe plate gave a definite wow factor. Very impressive and original.<br />

You can’t go wrong with the Sushi Deluxe plate. Out sushi review wouldn’t be complete without talking about something non-food related. Namely, that couple a few tables down from us. How does that guy get a girl like that? She was out of his league, according to this half of the Sushi Toronto team.

The original plan was to go to <a href="http://www.takesushi.ca/">Take Sushi</a> however, when you were browsing their menu, you noticed that that it actually comes from the Nami website! I guess they are somehow related. Maybe the same owner? That peaked my interest to check out Nami. The first thing that I noticed after some googling is that someone on Yelp said that they are the originators of the sushi pizza! The decision to go here instead was pretty easy after that bold claim.

Pretty much the only consistent thing we eat at each Toronto sushi establishment we visit. So, I walked into NAMI and was expecting it to be a little more high end than it was. The booths, however, look quite nice. They were all reserved, however. Service was prompt and I ordered up a ‘large’ Sapporo.

The booths and the rest of the seats did fill up fairly quickly after we arrived though. Looking through the menu, I can see already that it has “higher end” pricing with each dish being $2 – $5 more than other standard sushi restaurants around time. Let’s see if it’s going to be worth extra cost.

I totally agree. If NAMI is where the sushi pizza was ‘invented’ then it’s the other sushi restaurants that have furthered it to make it a worthy dish. I wouldn’t order the sushi pizza here again. For some reason I thought the Sushi Appetizer would have been bigger but I guess I was wrong. The sushi was decent – no qualms there. The little cucumber rolls that came with it I didn’t even bother with. They should put two decent rolls in there instead of three cucumber rolls. I suppose that’s standard, though.

Yup that’s pretty much standard for the Sushi Appetizer at most places. Probably not the best dish to share since there’s just not enough especially when 3 of them are the cucumber rolls. It’s too bad that they didn’t have any small sushi platter or combo available. The next dish was the spicy tuna and spicy scallop rolls which came out together. I must admit, I’ve never had the spicy scallop rolls before. Good pick and will definitely try again at our next sushi stops. These spicy rolls tasted pretty good and are on the spicier side of the spectrum.

Yeah, agreed on the lack of selection in terms of sizes. There weren’t really any combo type options available. Agreed also on the spicy tuna and spicy scallop rolls – they were decent—and spicy! (sounds weird that I would say that but we’ve been to other sushi restaurants where the spicy rolls aren’t really spicy?!). The final item, then, is the Sushi Spring Roll. It was ‘alright’ – not amazing, but not bad. Service was quick and courteous – can’t complain there.

The Sushi Spring Roll was probably the best out of the bunch for me. Yes the service was pretty good. I also noticed that the place really started to fill up by 7 pm or so. Once that started happening, you really feel the tight squeeze as the tables are very close to each other. You are basically sitting beside each other. Again, recommendation is to reserve a booth if you want a little bit of privacy.

Well, NAMI seems to be named quite often as one of the better sushi restaurants in Toronto – and the outside gives that aura. The prices do as well. But does the sushi stand up to all of this? I’ll say no. If you’re going to pay more you expect more, and NAMI doesn’t have anything ‘more’ in my opinion. There’s really nothing special about it. Is the inside that much better? I’ve been to better. Is the service that much better? Not really. Is the selection better? No. Is the food that much better? Definitely not. I’ll end my rant by giving NAMI a 6/10.

It’s overrated in the sense that the decor and the look of the place doesn’t justify the added price. You could find many other sushi restaurants with much better tasting sushi and sushi rolls for much less. A very important thing to note is that the mens bathroom walls are either too thin or too close to the sushi/grill bar. You can clearly hear the conversations word for word from the other customers (Man says “I am starving.” Woman responds with “Yes me too. Wonder what we should order?”) which is actually kind of hilarious. Anyways, 6.5 / 10 for me.<br />

<p>I really had no idea there were that many in Toronto. Must be one of those rare sushi franchises here in TO. Anyways, this is my first taste of Ichiban. The place is small and cozy with a traditional bamboo looking decor. We arrived at around 6:30pm and were seated near the window. At that time, it wasn’t that busy.

We ordered the spicy salmon sushi pizza, spicy tuna rolls, the Rainbow Roll (california roll topped with tuna, salmon, avocado and red snapper), the Caterpillar Roll (barbequed eel and avocado wrapped with thinly sliced avocado and topped with spicy mayonnaise) and&#8230;

You can&#8217;t forget the &#8220;Fire Mountain Roll&#8221;. This time we opted to go only rolls route after the last few we focused on the sushi side of things. The food came out pretty quick with the sushi pizza first. It was a bit more spicy as per the description but I found the bed of rice way too hard/crunchy. I think they overcooked it in the deep fryer.

Can I declare Ichiban Sushi House’s spicy salmon sushi pizza the worst sushi pizza in Toronto?&#8230; I guess not, until we review every sushi restaurant in the city. However, this one was definitely the worst I’ve had so far. I didn’t even want the rest of the pieces that were sitting there. As you said, definitely too crunchy. Yikes. Not a good start.

The rest of the rolls were served together in a large serving plate. The presentation of all the rolls was nice, especially the caterpillar rolls which were the centre piece of the plate and actually did look like a caterpillar!<br />

Too bad the Ichiban Sushi House didn’t deliver on that. Ok, the Caterpillar roll was actually quite good (I’ll give them that) but the others were not great at all. Spicy tuna roll: ‘meh’; Rainbow roll: ‘ok’; Fire Mountain roll: I didn’t taste anything there—even the texture I didn’t like.

The best out of the bunch was the caterpillar roll. The Fire roll to me was the worst and they didn’t really have any taste or “fire” to them at all. It looks like they just sprinkled some chili spice on it and that was it. I guess you could say they are passable. It looks like this place is going to fall into the “yet another Toronto sushi restaurant” category which are a dime a dozen here.

I’m a fan of free fruit. Despite that I’m going to have to give Ichiban Sushi House at Front and Wellington a not-so-big 4 out of 10. That’s even lower than ‘yet another Toronto sushi restaurant’, I believe. Head up and over a few blocks to <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/2009/10/sakura-ichiban/">Sakura Ichiban</a> at Adelaide and Jarvis for a good sushi experience. Oh, and what’s with the height of the benches along the wall being so much higher than that of the chairs? So, if you sit along the wall on the bench you’re literally a foot higher than those in the chairs – and too high for the table. Weird.

Well the cantaloupe dessert is pretty much the worst for me. I am allergic to it so no instant +0.5 from me! In the end, not the most impressive experience by a long shot. In that area, I actually expected a lot better. 5/10 from me.

<p>Solo Sushi Bekkan is quite tiny, but the tiny ones are usually the best ones, I find. It’s not a place you would notice walking down Yonge Street, even though it’s only a few doors from Toronto’s main strip. I’m thinking it holds maybe 15 people at the most.

When I first arrived, it was pretty much empty. When I was seated I noticed some nice little touches you don’t see at the standard “yet another sushi” restaurants: Cloth napkins and little rock holders for your chopsticks.<br />

Wild. Ok, to the food itself. Everything was super fresh. It came out in stages (unlike most places we go to). We would finish one dish and then the next would come out. So, if you want variety all at once this isn’t the place. My only real issue was the rice. It seemed to fall apart from the fish quite easily making a total mess of my soy sauce dish.<br />

You can really tell the difference here. Also I noticed that the sushi was prepared in a more traditional way where there is some wasabi already in between the rice and the fish. I like that. Your right in that the rice was very soft and required a lot of chopstick skills to handle it properly without it breaking into pieces. After all the sushi restaurants we’ve reviewed so far, I had higher hopes for your skills. A bit disappointed my friend. The proof is in the soy sauce dish!<br />

Our server/owner/whomever even seemed to like that I was taking photos of everything and brought over something they store in the glass cabinet for me to photograph. Something about ‘All You Can Eat’ sushi places…<br />

The chef got very heated in that discussion. What I got out of it was that the “All you can eat” sushi idea originally came from Vancouver and he simply hates it. The quality of fish suffers and an overall lack of sushi skill that is required to prepare it. I think he mentioned something about seasonal fish or maybe overpopulation. Not exactly sure but what I do know is he hates the idea with a passion.

This place is pretty much the opposite of an ‘<a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/tag/ayce/">All You Can Eat</a>’ place anyway (and, yes, that’s a good thing). After our last dish we waited for a bit and we were then served complimentary dessert. I didn’t really care for it but it’s free so what the heck. The total bill before tax was $58.50. That includes a $10 beer. Sixty-six and change after tax. I was totally stuffed once it was over.<br />

Anyways, it was a rice pudding kind of thing and was nice finish to an overall excellent meal. Solo Sushi Bekkan is an easy recommend for me and especially over the other 3 sushi restaurants in the area. 9 / 10.

The rice was a bit messy but the freshness and service were impeccable. I also liked how he basically encouraged me to take more photos. Ditto for his disdain for low-quality sushi! You can tell they really care here – both with the food and the service. Skip the <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/category/yonge-college/">Yonge Street sushi strip north of College Street</a> and come up a block or two to Grosvenor and Yonge instead. You won’t be disappointed.

I arrived and was given a friendly greeting as soon as I walked in. I had the option of sitting at the sushi bar or the tables in the other room. I opted for the latter. The waitress arrived promptly and offered to take my coat which I took advantage of. My drink order arrived right away along with a hot towel. It wasn’t too busy but the tables that were occupied seemed to be by those working in the Financial District nearby.

Still have never sat by one of those yet. Anyways, I arrived a few minutes later and was greeted by the friendly staff who also took my coat. Then got a hot towel as well to wipe my hands with. Some nice touches so far. First thing I noticed was that you had an ice tea?!? Where’s the beer order?

<img src="http://sushitoronto.ca/wp-content/plugins/convo/images/comment_arrow_green.jpg" alt="Comment Arrow" class="comment_arrow" />Looks like this time we are going with more “hardcore” sushi and sashimi rather than the variety of rolls. Fune has more of a traditional type of menu, eg. doesn’t have some Toronto centric named rolls such as the Queen Street roll. Before the food arrived, the waitress came over and connected the table beside us to make room for the large plate. Good sign that we would be getting a lot of food. She was right, the platter/plate was pretty large, loaded with sashimi, sushi and only a few California rolls.

The rolls were quite good – as was the sashimi, but the real winner of this dish for me was the nigiri. Super fresh and with the wasabi in between the rice and fish. I don’t recall which one, but one of them was super spicy – of which I’m a fan. This was definitely some of the best sushi I’ve eaten. If I was to get this dish again, I’d likely stick with the nigiri and the rolls, but that’s just my personal preference.<br/><br />

I guess I was more in the mood for more fish and less rolls this time. The plate had a lot of variety of fresh fish, nice presentation with good sized pieces/portions. I hate when places give you super thin slices of sashimi and sushi. It’s rare to find places that actually put some wasabi in the sushi but I am told that this is how it’s supposed to be done. The sushi pizza was also decent but I thought that the base of deep fried rice was a bit overcooked/overfried so it was too crispy for my liking.<br/><br />

<p>‘Plan A’ was to hit up Ninki in Scotia Plaza but my fellow reviewer decided to sit himself down at the Adelaide location. No worries, though, as my guess is this one is more for those wanting a casual sushi experience anyway. I could be wrong. Also, this one is open on weekends, I believe, where the Scotia Plaza location is not.

Once I was seated, I look around the restaurant and notice a poster saying “try our other place in Scotia Plaza” and realize that I am in the wrong restaurant! Anyways, this place has a more casual feel to it with a lot of bright colours that seems geared to towards the non formal dining.

It’s actually pretty much across the street from the Adelaide entrance, so not much of a walk required. The banner out front screams that they are now open on Sundays – and that Saturday and Sunday dinner is all you can eat. We were there on a Tuesday, however, so it was a la carte for us. Our waitress was quick to offer us something to drink. I went with a ‘large’ Asahi, although it seemed like a regular sized bottle to me.

The whole point of sushi is that it is prepared fresh with care and skill by a sushi chef. I think for quality sushi, it should take a bit of time to prepare. In this case, it felt just a little too fast and the place wasn’t empty either! As always, it comes down to the taste but I was already feeling a little bit nervous.

I’ll start with the sushi pizza. Actually, the sushi pizza I enjoyed, although I noticed it was covered in their special sauce that seemed to be used on other menu items as well. The sushi tray was far from fresh and the Green Dragon roll was nothing special. I think my biggest disappointment was the spicy tuna roll. The sauce on top looked pretty much like cheese whiz and the fish to rice ratio was way out of whack (as in too much rice).

Unfortunately, there was a lack of any special about the rolls. Seems that it’s easier just to slather their spicy sauce on them rather than actually prepare the sushi as it should be mixed with any sauce beforehand then rolled. The worst for me was the Unagi. It looked like it was just microwaved for the 10th time and tasted that way. Almost tasted like it was a sardine.

We were still a bit hungry so risked one more roll: The Hamachi roll (which is super good at <a href="http://sushitoronto.ca/2009/03/ichiriki/">Ichiriki</a> on Bloor East). At Ninki Sushi? Not so much. Was there even any fish in it? I tasted and saw only rice.<br />

That’s basically the trick that all the prepackaged sushi places do. You know the ones at food courts or mall kiosks where the sushi combos are made before hand and you pick what you want from the cooler. Always avoid these places because you basically pay for a small sliver of fish on top a large portion of rice. Unless of course you simply love rice!

So, what was good at Ninki Sushi? The service was prompt; the restaurant setting was alright; the sushi pizza was decent… What wasn’t: Pretty much everything we ate, minus the sushi pizza. Let’s just say it wasn’t the first sushi experience of 2010 I was looking for. Quite the opposite. Not impressed. Sorry Ninki, but you get 3/10 from me.

I would imagine that the other location in Scotia Plaza must be better. I have to agree with you on this one: 3/10 from me as well. As a consolation prize, we can only go up from here right?
